Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

I’m not an obsessive record collector, but I do own the stereo and mono versions of this one. And they are both amazing in different ways. This pick is more of a reference to that whole world of American soul music because it could have been someone like Darrell Banks, Otis Redding or Sam Cooke. As an album I don’t know if it’s perfect. It’s got a couple of not so good tracks on it, but I love the simplicity of it. It’s almost like the polar opposite of the music I make. There’s no needless playing, it just sits around that vocal enough to cover it and make sense of the song. Hendrix is supposed to be on this album [uncredited]. I’m not very big on the facts and stories behind records but to my ears the first two tracks definitely sound like Hendrix.
