9. Mim SuleimanAdera Dera
I’ll bore anyone who will stand still long enough with the fact, and it’s a fact, that Maurice Fulton is the greatest producer. His solo stuff is great and the record with Mu, the remixes, all so great. What keeps me coming back to this Mim album (or the more recent one Si Bure) is the odd combination of sweetness and chaos. This record is fun and vibey but feels like it hasn’t lost its sense of adventure and mischief. Fulton productions have a very strong personality to them and it’s a credit to Mim that she stands equal to him, not overshadowing his aesthetic but equally not being subsumed into it. The way they weave trad elements in with electronics is a study in artistic generosity and good taste; on paper this is complete car crash but it just works so well – they make it look easy. Mim is an all-too-welcome reminder that the ‘future’ doesn’t have to conjure lazy Bladerunner-ised stylings, but can be so much more.
