3. Ethel CainPreacher’s Daughter

There are so many things I can say about this album and this artist. I discovered her whilst shooting Stranger Things season four, which would have been 2020. I remember the first time I heard ‘A House in Nebraska’, she’d done this live video in a church before the album came out. I was in my rented house in Atlanta on this rainy night – the rain in Georgia is like nothing else you’ve ever seen, just fucking carnage – and I watched this video and burst into tears. I just wept uncontrollably.
Preacher’s Daughter is just such a beautiful record. I love the storytelling and the concept album approach. But I also love what it stands for, and I love what she stands for. I love that Southern Gothic take back. Like, we’re going to take this part of our world back for us. I’m so proud of her for being that and for representing that. It just signifies beauty and power for me.
After the album came out, I went to go see her in New York and we hung out, and she’s just fucking awesome. I sent her a message when the new album [Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You] came out, particularly when I heard the track ‘Waco, Texas’. I texted her to say thank you for the tears!
