Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. MuseAbsolution

This straddles the line between hard, aggressive rock and beautiful melody so perfectly. The compositions are these warm bundles of mania and beauty all at the same time. That opening to ‘Apocalypse Please’, those triplets! It makes an entrance.

Creatively, it is a very inspirational record. Not just the way that Matt Bellamy plays guitar and sings, but also the way he plays piano. The pervasive classical references that are peppered throughout this album are amazing. It’s only recently as I’ve looked more into Chopin and composers like that, where I’ve noticed how Matt pulled references and put them in here. It’s so theatrical, which I love. I did also have My Chemical Romance on this list for a while… We also have to give a shout out to Freddie Mercury, because without Queen, neither of those bands would exist.
