Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Gus GusMexico

Here’s another artist I feel I could put any of their albums in. I don’t think people talk about Gus Gus enough. Their albums just get better and better, and Mexico came out probably five years ago and the opening song is called ‘Obnoxiously Sexual’ and has a massive chorus, and I think the Gus Gus production is unparalleled and always sounds amazing. Birgir Þórarinsson has done a lot with John Grant and produced most of Pale Green Ghosts, I think Biggi is an incredible producer, and this album Mexico has some incredible singles on it – ‘Obnoxiously Sexual’, ‘Another Life’, and there’s ‘Crossfade’ which is this gorgeous love song sung by two men and it’s this very romantic, queer love song about crossfading into each other. I’m hoping to go to Iceland to work with him and John Grant actually, it’s kind of my dream to be in the room with the both of them. I love John so much and I almost put Queen of Denmark as one of these albums – I’m crazy about him. He’s really sweet, we’ve become friends but we’ve never met in person, we just get on the phone and talk to each other. I think he’s an amazing guy.
