7. Elton John – The Fox
Elton’s kind of like the Stones – there’s tons of records of his that don’t necessarily have the concert hits on them, but they’re still fucking great Elton John albums. I always urge people to explore his albums – there are still Elton John albums that I don’t know top to bottom, and I don’t know Reg Strikes Back (laughs). Two years ago when I really got into an album of his called Jump Up! which is a killer record, but they’re not talked about because they’re not Goodbye Yellow Brick Road or have the hits on them, but The Fox is amazing. The opening song ‘Breaking Down Barriers’ is amazing but the fucking crown of this album is the instrumental medley in the middle of it ‘Carla/Etude – Fanfare – Chloe’. I love his instrumentals so much. People don’t really talk about his instrumentals, but they are so epic. I’m actually meeting up with him in two weeks and we’ve never really talked about his instrumentals, but I think he should really make a mostly instrumental album. It would be amazing. But this medley, turns into this song ‘Chloe’ and its one of my favourite things he’s ever made. I put this record on the list because I don’t think some of these albums get the attention they deserve, so I urge people to check out The Fox. I almost put Blue Moods on here which does have a couple of hits on it, which is also fucking fantastic. There’s always plenty to discover in his massive catalogue. He’s one of the greatest.
