Of all the artists who have agreed to take up our Baker’s Dozen challenge and provide us with a list of their 13 favourite albums, J Mascis’s choices are arguably the least surprising. It’s no great shock, after all, to hear him profess his adoration for Iggy and the Stooges or herald the influence that the mighty Black Sabbath had upon his own bilious racket of noise making. And even those more obscure punk releases and lesser-known recordings that critics snubbed their noses at are to be half-expected from the Dinosaur JR man.
But his list certainly isn’t without its revelations. Who would have thought that J would look up to Nick Cave as a "fashion icon"? Or that he’d be inspired by British punk younglings Eater and their 14-year-old drummer? Just like the previous lists we’ve featured, his selections provide both unexpected selections and a fine insight into the records that made him the artist he is today.

The new solo album from J Mascis, Several Shades Of Why, is out now. He’ll also be playing live shows at Whelans in Dublin on April 13 and Cargo, London on April 14.
