Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. Imogen HeapEllipse

A musical genre-bending hybrid of uniqueness. She’s just one of one. She is the reason I stack vocals and use counter melodies. A friend of mine, LaShawn Daniels, who was a vocal producer for Brandy, told me he was inspired by Imogen. He stacked vocals for Brandy because of her work.

The reason I like this album, though, is because I still think for someone that has started that early to still make work like Ellipse speaks volumes. It also speaks to her work in tech. She created the Mi.Mu gloves which Ariana Grande would of course use. Her approach to tech and sound design should be celebrated and talked about more. She should really be studied in universities.  I don’t think she’s celebrated as such, and a lot of women get that. That’s like Bjork and Missy Elliott as well – women who are profoundly brilliant as producers, and don’t ever get recognised because they are the singers and the writers.
