Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Air FranceNo Way Down

This little record has so much emotional content, it’s truly explosive! It’s sad they’ve called it quits since then, because I feel like the world deserves more Air France, but honestly I feel so spiritually nourished every time I listen to this record and I’m sure it will last me a whole lifetime. ‘No Excuses’ remains for me one of the most important and inspirational songs ever! It’s a record that, when I first heard it, back in 2010, I loved it then. But it sounded so different to me then than it sounds now. To me then it sounded really ambient, like a ball of sound. Almost like a painting. I was thinking, "This is so sick!" And now when I listen to a song like ‘No Excuses’, it sounds so discreet to me now, much more than I was aware of before. And I think actually my own arc, my own creative development over the last six years or whatever, it developed in tandem to that listening. So my own music used to be this kind of wall of sound, and now it’s like all the discrete parts are really visible. So now when I listen to the Air France record I can hear every little choice that they make. Every little sample.
