Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. Talk TalkThe Rainbow

This album, overall, is probably one of the most important albums for me. I learned so much about timing and space from this record. Just the architecture of it. I don’t know how many hundreds of times I’ve listened to this song. At a certain point, it’s just infused in so much of my subconscious and what I do. I can hear the quality of certain sounds that I draw out of my modular, and then I listen back to this track like, "Oh, there’s this thing that I like that is related to what I just did." From I don’t know how many listens, it’s just there. It’s infused at this point.

tQ: I remember the first time I heard it, in my early twenties, just blasting it. And that harmonica – oh my god – the sound of it blew my mind completely.

And the moments of pause and refrain. It has this organic thing, too, that I think we’re feeling. It’s amazing, too, that they wrote this huge pop song that I remember from being a kid, that we all heard on the radio. And then, later, we’re like, "Oh my god, Spirit Of Eden, oh my god."
