Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. MariahShinzo No Tobira

tQ: This Mariah track is another one I hadn’t heard, but is also great.

Oh my god, you’ve never heard this album?

tQ: I’ve never heard this album.

This is like, wow. OK. So, you know what I was talking about with the Kyoka record, where it goes beyond genres? This one just goes, there are so many. Every track is different. Every track is good. It’s so hard to choose the best, or the favorite, but this one really sticks out to me. A friend of mine reissued this album, luckily, and I really think it stands as one of the most brilliant records.

I don’t know much about the making of the album or the band – they’re from Tokyo, I believe. The singer is Julie Fowell, and she’s singing in Armenian, which I think is interesting. It’s just one of those tracks, when you hear it, it just breaks your head open. You’re like, "Wow, anything is possible!" It’s so cool. There’s kind of an incandescent energy to it. And hopefulness. The last track on my album, that kind of weird, Baroque track – I think there’s a parallel energy there of hopefulness that they also end on. This album is very, very different than the album I just made, but I think that maybe there’s some of that vibe in there.
