Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. Teenage FanclubBandwagonesque

This band saved me from being a narrow-minded heavy metal-loving and only heavy metal-loving twat. Certainly woke me up little. In ’90/’91 for me, it was Maiden, AC/DC and Wolfsbane; nowt wrong with that, but there was much more to music than tight jeans and guitar solos. Thankfully I found it in the form of four Scots with distortion pedals and a skill for perfect harmonies.

So off I go to the Marquee to see London funk rockers Atom Seed. I was a big fan and had seen them lots. This night was a mixed bill with the Fannies and Chapterhouse. I never saw Atom Seed again after that night, but I bought this LP soon after and have seen Teenage Fanclub about 30 times since. They were also my daughter’s first gig, aged three.

Opener ‘The Concept’ has a nod to the Quo. Follower ‘Satan’, along with ‘Metal Baby’ and ‘Heavy Metal’ on their debut poses the question, did this lot see the light also? ‘Star Sign’ is pure beauty and the simplicity of ‘What You Do To Me’ amazes me to this day. This band turned me to Swervedriver, Eugenius, Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney and naturally Nirvana, and for that I am happy chap. Over the years their distorted guitars have been replaced with a more clean sound, but I still love to hear ‘Everything Flows’ even though it sadly indicates the end of another great show.
Thank you Norman, thank you Gerry, thank you Raymond and thank you Brendan.
