Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Man Or Astro-man?Your Weight On The Moon

A fantastic 10" on wonderful heavy green vinyl. From the off you’re on a space journey. The soundtrack edits from some lost B-movie kicks it off… "Ignition sequence starts", counting down to blast off, sitting perfectly when the twang clang of surf guitar and solid snare cracks start up, taking you to the moon in 1950.

I can remember exactly when I bought this as the day in question a bunch of us had bunked off work to have a piss up in London. Most of the day found us camped in the Endurance boozer on Berwick Street, back when it was still a fantastic grubby market traders’ pub. Pint and steak for a fiver! Between the many glasses of Guinness, we would take it in turns to nip out to purchase more records from another nearby shop, returning triumphant ready for another pint. I may have had two steaks that afternoon. Along with quite a few other LPs and singles, I bought this gem. In the evening, we headed to the Powerhaus in Islington for a mate’s gig, upon which my stash of records went missing. I was so pissed off thinking some fuck had nicked the lot I vandalised a toilet. We got home at 5.30 am after a taxi driver took pity on us and gave us a lift for the little money we had left. The next day to my shame, a now sadly departed friend phoned informing me his dad had picked the records up that night and they were safe in his house.

I only saw Man Or Astro-man? play once for a Peel session, live from Maida Vale. One of them set fire to a theremin.
