Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Julie TippettsSunset Glow

This is one of one of my biggest vocal influences.

In what way?

Well, Glory Days is the opposite maybe, because they’re such short songs, but typically I like to extend. This period, she goes free with the vocals but she’s not going out in that Maggie Nichols UK improv style. It’s quite melancholy, but also very sexual sensual music as well.

I was living on my own in Austin, working as a PA while I was starting to do more music and a little touring. So I started working for a cardiovascular surgeon, and I would do my own stuff during the day and do work for him in the middle of the night. I did not want to see office workers, or have to dress like an office worker. And I spent so much time listening to this record going to this place to do my thing in this weird office building. I did some recordings in there as well actually, on cassette – they’re gone of course.

Of course they are.

It was about 2002, I was just about to move to Philadelphia, just before I met David [Keenan]. There was something about this this idea of a sunset glow – it did speak of new horizons to me. There was such depth to the music and feeling to the music, it carried me away from Texas.
