Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Kanye WestYeezus

He is, in many ways, that mythical male, the kind of all-conquering, all-powerful symbol. Those features are so accentuated in him that I find it fascinating. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that a man of such accentuated masculinity would be married to a woman of such extraordinarily accentuated feminine tropes. Her huge arse and huge boobs and huge lips. As a couple they’re kind of art in themselves.

There’s a famous old Stone Age sculpture called the Venus of Willendorf, a beautiful artefact of a woman, a feminine totem of fertility: big bum, big boobs. I took one look at it and thought, "That’s Kim Kardashian." She is not the Venus of Willendorf, but she’s the Venus of PAPER magazine.
