Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. Harold Budd And Cocteau TwinsThe Moon And The Melodies

Vocally, Elizabeth Fraser is a huge inspiration. I love the way she has her own dialect and the way she sings is so emotive that you don’t even need to have any lyrical content to know what she’s singing about.

The collaboration with Harold Budd stands out, again, because his ambient music –I’m a big fan of ambient music, because obviously it doesn’t have vocals – but it speaks and creates a narrative without any kind of lyrical sense. That played into how we made our record. The music sounds like the lyrics and the lyrics sound like the music, if that makes sense. This album is a real inspiration for that, how you should always know what the song is about before you’ve even caught a lyric.
