2. Blues ControlBlues Control
Right around when this record came out I discovered them on Myspace back in the Myspace heyday, and that one track, ‘Boiled Peanuts’, just grabbed me. The melody line on that, the piano track and everything, it’s just cool. It’s got that repeating drum pattern, and the guitar wailing, and how long it’s just swirling – it really got me. At the time I was working a lot with my GDFX electronic project, and I was also doing a band at college at the time called Family Of Love with Tyler Dusenbury [Liturgy bassist], so we were on Myspace booking shows and stuff, connecting with other bands. So that’s how I heard Blues Control, and then they came and played at my school and I met them. There was just something about what they were doing and the way they were playing their instruments, it was all going into a mixer, and there was a cassette player doing the drum patterns. The whole approach they had to playing the show was really interesting and inspiring to me at the time, and it really informed in a lot of ways the way I was then making the GDFX stuff. Family Of Love ended up playing a couple of shows with them, and they’re just really great people, and it had a huge effect on me at the time when I was becoming a touring musician, when it started to seem like this was something I was actually gonna make a crack at.
