Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Benoit PioulardLasted

An ex-girlfriend of mine turned me on to Benoit Pioulard and this is the record that she gave to me. He’s made four or five records. They’re all great. He has this very specific way of singing. I can’t even really tell you what he’s saying. It’s this peculiar mix of a little Scott Walker, a little Nick Drake, and these Eno-y ambient sounds that veer off into sound explosions that go off somewhere and dissipate and then return back to song structure. He does what he wants and he does it in a really compelling way. And again I could’ve chosen different records of his but Lasted was the first record that I heard and the title track in particular is a great way to introduce yourself to the magic that is Benoit Pioulard.
