I grew up listening to this while driving with my father through the desert to go visit my nanna in El Centro. My mother was born in Mexico. My uncle showed that record to my dad and when we would drive to see my nanna this would always play. I’ve played it to other people and they’re like, "Nah, fuck this record" but for me, it basically sums up my childhood like all the way up to seven years old. As soon as I hear it, I’m just taken back to chilling with my brother, my father and my mother and just driving through the fucking desert and every time I hear this, I picture that time.
I grew up on my parents’ music – it was the foundation of what I’m into. My younger brother used to play a lot of Jimi, but I didn’t understand Jimi – it was too much information for me at that time to process. But when they played jazz, I was able to space right out. Right now, I’m listening to a lot of jazz again. It’s either rap from the late ’80s or early ’90s or jazz. I’m not really into the modern jazz scene – I’m an old-school fucking jazz dude, y’know.
