Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Beth Gibbons & Rustin ManOut Of Season

It’s so bare and raw – it’s just a fucking acoustic guitar. It’s not much but her fucking voice and the pain in her shit. I heard it and it’s just like, "Fuuuuucccckkk!" I love Beth Gibbons: my wife knows and she gets mad, but I would have liked to have married her as well! She is just so honest and true; she’s not on any social media or anywhere and lets her voice do the talking.

I felt like this was the third Portishead record. Everyone was waiting on that third album and for her to go in this direction on an album so dark and slow, it just felt more like the next album they were supposed to make. On some of those records it sounds like Louis Armstrong – it was just incredible for me.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Mick Harvey, Emilíana Torrini
