1. Pharaoh SandersThe Impulse Story
Pharaoh Sanders is somebody who I was introduced to by Richard Hornby, who co-produced our record. He reminds me a lot of Fela Kuti in the sense that his music sounds very visually vast in my mind. It transports me to the world that he’s trying to create. Tunes like ‘Upper Egypt And Lower Egypt’, which is one of my favourite tracks of all time, is absolutely expansive. It’s 16 minutes long and another’s over half an hour. He’s not trying to rush, he’s very much trying to take his time and expose this world to you second by second, minute by minute. I love experimental jazz. As I’ve got older I’ve started to listen to it more and he’s one of my favourite artists so it made sense to choose this record.
