Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Captain BeefheartTrout Mask Replica

It fascinated me this record. He trapped his band in a house and he was like a dictator, berating them and insulting them, constantly retaking takes. Really, really odd production and recording of the record. And lyrically he’s amazing. I play it to people and a lot of them just go: "what the hell is this?" But he’s an artist and this is the kind of record you have to concentrate on. You can’t just put it on in the background, it’s something you have to really focus on. For me that’s one of the beauties of it. You can’t describe it. Musically and lyrically it’s all over the place. Some could say it’s sloppy, or it’s genius. It divides opinion so much, among my friends at least, but I think it’s great. Anything that people can’t just put in a box or move on to the next record, I think that’s great.

And he’s really funny, he’s a really funny writer and I like that. I like when people don’t take themselves too seriously. And I like dark humour. I love everything about Trout Mask Replica.
