Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. DMX – It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot>/i>

I remember being on the train as a kid, and my friend shows me this album that he’s got in his bag. There’s a man standing there and he’s covered in blood, and I remember just thinking, “What the fuck is this?!”. You’ve got to remember this is like – we’re coming off the back of the Bad Boy era – glossy, shiny, and then you’re just seeing raw and uncut, this blood dripping man. And then I was just intrigued to listen to it, and there’s an energy that I had never heard before. That sort of energy has definitely influenced me in terms of his substance as well. His songs touch you deeply while also having the balance of energetic show songs.
