Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Renegade SoundwaveHowyoudoin?

Not many people know about Renegade Soundwave, they were sort of a band that never got the kudos. They’re a bit like The KLF, it was around that sort of time where dance music, kind of trance psych, meets this weird, druggie sort of culture. I knew them because my dad remixed one of their songs back in the 90s, and that kind of sound was played a lot in my household. I’ve just recently come back to them, because I recently came back to The KLF as well, particularly the ambient albums. I just thought, ‘Wow, that was really fucking interesting, what people in the 90s were doing was really quite out there’. And I think these guys were another example of that, they were just doing their own thing, probably in a sort of basement studio somewhere in the UK, taking a lot of drugs and making beats. I find it quite familiar, I think because I come from that, my dad was part of the UK rave scene. So there’s something I find really kind of nostalgic about this music.
