Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. Inauguration Of The Pleasure Dome

When I did Enter The Void, I was thinking of both Inauguration Of The Pleasure Dome and the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. There are not many movies that I see that make me feel like I am on good drugs. Inauguration Of The Pleasure Dome is so trippy! There are many people who refuse to do drugs. Show them this movie and they will have an idea of what it feels like!

I first saw it in the early 1990s, when I first started going to film festivals. Inauguration Of The Pleasure Dome wasn’t very easy to find, but I later ended up getting a VHS. Since then I’ve probably seen it 30 or 40 times. Once, in Paris, [a cinema] showed a version with a triple screen showing three different versions, because he re-edited the movie a few times.
