Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. Einstürzende NeubautenZeichnungen des Patienten O. T.

This was very influential on me, alongside Pink Floyd. Fifteen years later than Meddle, they pushed music forward. They created very contemporary, dark, concrete sounds, based around Berlin in the 80s. They would also create these very unpredictable soundscapes, with a bit of ambient, banging on everything they could find.

I saw them live in Geneva in 1984, and they were playing at midday at a summer festival! They had spent the day before hunting out objects from construction sites to use as instruments – I thought that was brilliant. Also the fact they had no complex about speaking German – they said to people, "This is it". They showed you could sing in your own language, so we could sing in French.
