Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Now I’m about 13, 14, and we had an assignment in our music lessons in school. The assignment was to go home and learn any song of our choice and come back and perform it. For some reason, I chose this one. It was one of my favourites at the time, and I wrote out all the words to learn it. Out of the whole class, which had around 26 people, there were about four performances. Mine was one of them. I look back on it and think, "Oh my god, why did I do that?" I didn’t have to, but maybe there was something in me that just wanted to. So that’s why I’d say I blame this song as well, because this was the first time I performed to an audience. And it went well, I think.

I definitely look back on it favourably. And Cutty Ranks is a legend. Some people who know who he is actually compare me to him; they say I have a voice and a tone like him, so that’s a bit weird and funny.
