Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

This just took the music forward another step – I didn’t think the music could get any better or get that much moreish. But this one, just like ‘The Message’, it was like, "Oh my god." There was just so much mystique to these tracks because you didn’t really get access to them for a good seven months to a year after you first heard them. So that alone just created such a hype around tracks, so when your friend phones and says, "Yeah, I’ve got it, I bought it." "What!" At this point, I don’t think I was in school anymore, so maybe in college. Whatever was important, forget it! I’m coming now, to hold this record. First of all, I want to mix it, DJ it a little bit, and I’ve got lyrics by now so I want to see how I sound on the track. And then we wanted to make a tape. That was actually the first point where I thought, "We’ve got new music, let’s make a tape – you on the decks, me MCing. Let’s make a tape and then listen to it." There was nothing more fulfilling than that.
