Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. WilcoYankee Hotel Foxtrot

I remember being very young when The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie came out, and I remember three songs being in the credits: Ween’s ‘Ocean Man’, this Flaming Lips song, and ‘Just A Kid’ by Wilco. I remember loving that song. My dad also had Wilco (The Album), but I never listened to that – I always thought of Wilco as the band that made the SpongeBob song, which is so funny.

Then through getting into music more, I had seen the cover of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot – you know, the two crazy parking structures in Chicago – and I listened to it. I was so taken by the sounds on that album, even the weird ambient stuff. I remember watching the documentary about them which is about the making of that album. It really showed them all as human beings and songwriters and how tough it was for them to get that album out, it really inspired me. I still love Wilco so much, but I remember being so obsessed with them when I saw that movie.
