I remember finding out that [Joe Keery] was a musician, and I remember he’d released something on Bandcamp on his own before. I Googled his music and found it. I was 12, and I went up to him and referenced one of his songs. He was like “…what?” I was like, “You know, that song that you did?”, and he was like, “Oh, you listened to that?” I was really embarrassed. 

Then I heard Post Animal [of which Keery was then a member]. At the time, I also loved Tame Impala and was into that genre of newer psych rock. I felt like it really captured that feel, but a little more lo-fi and indie. I remember hearing ‘Goggles’ for the first time; at the beginning, it has this drum fill. I was so struck by it, and finding out that Joe played drums on that, I was like, “Oh my God, this guy’s the coolest guy ever.” So he was unbelievably formative for me. 

I just saw him a few nights ago and try to keep in contact with him as much as possible. I’ve learned so much from him, I’m lucky enough to have a brother relationship with him where he has always been so supportive of me and whatever I want to do. He’s a really important person in my life, no matter what. He really helped me record my music for the first time – also, him and Adam Thein, who is in Joe’s band, mixed a bunch of Aubreys songs. He’s always been really involved.
