Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Nina SimoneEveryone’s Gone To The Moon

Nina Simone teaches me how to be free as a musician, she’s helped me expose and uplift myself. What I love about Everyone’s Gone To The Moon is her combination of desperation, her extraordinary freedom of self-expression and a sense that she is on the brink of madness. This album is very on the edge – “Everyone’s Gone to the Moon” is an off the wall delivery where she shows that sometimes the rules are to be challenged. She shows a real human touch of great compassion in ‘Another Spring’, her brilliance on the piano has no boundaries here, she was just playing as freely as she could. She taught me to be true to myself and honest in music, however wild that is. As long as it feels right, do it. Do it if you feel it.
