Johnny Mathis – Open Fire, Two Guitars
I love the title track from this record, ‘Open Fire, Two Guitars’, “I recall an old romance… poking ashes with a willow.” My idea of this record was aided and abetted when I was Editor In Chief of Code magazine and Johnny Mathis came into the office. Oh man, there’s something that happens to certain people when they’ve been at the top for so long… And Johnny Mathis was in the same place that Prince was going to before he found God. He was on his own planet. Planet Fucking Mathis, man. He turned up with these two super handsome strapping young men who looked exactly like one another. I mean, were they brothers? Were all three of them lovers? It was just great man. I have to say the single strangest sexual experience I’ve ever had was with two sisters, so when I see him with these two brothers/ man servant guys and Mathis has adopted this as his lifestyle… my hat goes off to the dude. Music made by people on a completely different wavelength to everyone else tends to be compelling.
