Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Jimi HendrixBand Of Gypsys

I grew up with this record and it didn’t have a songwriting focus on it; it’s more a jam record. I was enchanted by it and this was the only thing at that time that had this sensibility. It was feedback and jamming and weird notes and like, wow, what chord was that? And it’s another window into a special perception of music. It’s a shortcut to beyond the clouds.

Jimi’s voice here is so ecstatic and he’s such a way ahead of his time genius.
