Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

This, for me, stands out. Sister was great and Daydream Nation was amazing but Goo is the kind of record that you play and want to put back on again. It doesn’t leave you drained and it has just the right amount of Sonic Youth. The songs are great, you go to the bubble but some of those songs are fucking ferocious! I’ve always loved Lee Ranaldo’s songs and ‘Mote’ is probably my favourite track on the album. It’s like symphonic, melodic, atonal paranormal rage! There’s always an esoteric quality about Sonic Youth and I personally think, much as I love Sonic Youth as an ensemble, I go on to listen to his solo stuff and I still get into that bubble and I enjoy dwelling in it. It’s a soul-searching frequency that’s quite high and I think on Goo it’s there but this is the album with the most pop songs blended with that sensibility. Every song here could be a single. It’s the only album they have like this. I love it and keep going back to it.
