Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Irwin Chusid – Songs in the Key of Z, Compilations Vol 1 & 2

Outsider music is something I share huge interest in: the idea of somebody with no previous musical experience, attempting to create music, and as a result unintentionally producing something which is strange, beguiling and much of the time, unpredictable.

I’m a huge fan of imperfection, and these compilations are just that: pure imperfection. In production, I don’t favour autotune, nor do I believe in Pro Tool-ing the life out of something in order to make music ‘palatable’ to the human ear. It’s extremely fascinating to me and these compilations represent music (for me) in one of its purest and most potent forms.

Aside from the compilations, the accompanying book also makes for a great read.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
