Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Well, I think he’s probably my favourite musician in the world. He’s a friend of mine, and he’s taught me a lot about music and the way I listen to music, and I thank him for helping me with that. His compositions, all of them, are mind-blowing. This is the newest one, and there is always a thread. It all kind of sounds the same, to a degree.

And yet the camera pivots, and shows you something else, even though it might be a different part of the same landscape, and it just seems all of a sudden very different. He talks about this record really beautifully, about playing in the upper register of the piano, and being interested by a lot of different music that does that – like Ahmad Jamal’s records from the 1950s. Martin’s a huge jazz monster, and I hear jazz tunes in here, in ways that I hadn’t heard before, but they’re buried in the material. It’s a gorgeous piece of piano music. And it’s long – I like music that goes on.
