Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. King Sunny AdéSynchro System

He’s the master of a style of music that not many people know about, called jùjú. It’s party music – really percussion heavy, with a bit of horns as well. On Fridays, they had these things in Lagos where all the socialites would come out to party, and Sunny Adé played a lot of these parties before he got big. Streets would be shut down, canopies would be put up, and everyone would be dressed to the nines. Mum would go to these parties and end up with a record, so her collection became huge. I remember when I had to babysit my sister, when she was still a baby and cried a lot, that she’d stop crying any time I put this record on.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Seun Kuti, Pauline Black, Simple Minds
