Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Aretha FranklinAmazing Grace

My mum loved Aretha, all her older music, and would play it a lot at home. Amazing Grace rung true to us, because my nan used to take us to sunday school every week, and that was one of the songs we heard. I’ve loved all her modern, mainstream stuff, but when I discovered this album and that she’d done a lot of church and gospel stuff, I fell in love with her even more. I saw a documentary recently about how the album was recorded, and seeing her perform with the choir brought me to tears.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Skunk Anansie, Paul Heaton
