Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

This is full of Danny Thompson-like basslines, so it feels very British to me, played against a landscape of Southern blues. Of course, Duke is British. I’ve known him for twenty years – we used to play shows in the 12 Bar together. I like how ‘Mescalito’ has this driving beat that sounds like an electronic drum even though it’s not. This record is almost angelic in a devilish way, which is also Mark Lanegan through and through. He was always kind of hanging on between heaven and earth all the time.
