Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. ChicThe Very Best Of Chic

I went to boarding school from age eleven to fourteen which was an interesting experience, but anyway. In my time there, we weren’t allowed to listen to music or watch the telly, but I did like a lot of disco. I loved ‘Ring My Bell’ and some lovers’ rock like ‘Silly Games’ by Janet Kay, but Chic I was absolutely crazy about. We used to have a dance class called Limbering [laughs] and they used to play Chic in this class at school. They used to play ‘Le Freak’! Chic were so ahead of their time, really. The music is so sharp and crisp and sounded like the future, even though it was played live by a band. And so gorgeously produced and those basslines – it was just out on its own.
