Jazz is another example of something it took me ages to get into, but Sketches Of Spain has been a gateway drug into it. This whole album is so cinematic, it pictures a landscape in front of your mind’s eye. It really has a very atmospheric beauty, it’s almost like reading a Hemmingway short story. This led me to Coltrane, who is the most important jazz musician for me. After listening to this hundreds of times, it’s lost none of its affect – in fact it’s something that only continues to build. It’s half an hour of music, it shouldn’t really have that kind of longevity to it but it never ceases to hit me – It never tires out, it stands like diamond.
