Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Cesária ÉvoraMiss Perfumado

I don’t know a whole lot about her and she hasn’t been a direct inspiration to me but, like Jackson C. Frank, is just one of those albums that’s been with me for a long time. I came across her when I was in Marfa, Texas which is a very odd place. It’s a town in the middle of the desert and you go to the one main street they have in town and it’s men in cowboy hats and wild dogs following you – coming from Denmark it was a very odd and exotic place. I was wandering through these desolate streets and I walked past someone having a yard sale. She had a little transistor radio, playing which I later found out was Cesaria, I stayed pretending to look at what she was selling because I wanted to listen to the rest of the song, it just drew me in.
