Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Toots and the MaytalsFunky Kingston

Everything my brother listened to was filtered through him into my ears. Most things he got into, I got into – not through osmosis, just because I was there. "Obsessed" isn’t the right word but he would so aggressively dig into things. I’m curious now to know just how deeply he was into certain things before he moved on. So he was listening to The Clash and the Sex Pistols and then suddenly reggae appeared in the house. I don’t know how he came to this one but we both loved it and it’s just like a great party record. At the time, his voice was so powerful. When he got aggressive, it was really something. I like lots of reggae but this is one I always come back to.
