Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Van MorrisonAstral Weeks

I’ve listened to that album maybe more than any other. I’d be curious to know how many times. Again, my way into him was through movies. I was really obsessed with Martin Scorsese when I was a young teenager – that’s kind of how I got into The Band and Bob Dylan, through watching The Last Waltz. Van Morrison’s performance in that is so incredible. There’s a movie that came out in 1989 – not a great movie – that James Woods is in called Immediate Family, and Glenn Close, Mary Stuart Masterson. The Glenn Close character plays ‘Into The Mystic’ for this young woman who’s having a baby, and I know I’d heard Van Morrison on the radio, but it really stuck with me watching this movie when I was 13. After that I got Moondance and Astral Weeks and I love so much of his music now.
