Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

I had a friend who worked at a record store and she got me this box set that contained the first three Elvis Costello albums and a live album, and I just loved it. I was just obsessed with all that stuff. Then I bought Get Happy!! on vinyl. I used to have this ritual after school, if I wasn’t playing sports or going out with friends, of listening to records for two or three hours. I’d just sit and sing along. In some ways, I learned how to sing by doing this. With Get Happy!!, it was maybe more aggressive or something. I was listening to Led Zeppelin a lot, too, and a song like ‘Black & White World’, it’s such a heavy song, it’s almost like ‘When The Levee Breaks’. I loved the previous stuff but I just really connected with this one. I don’t really listen to it so much these days but I was at my mom’s house recently and so I was listening to it again and it’s still great.
