Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. Bridget St JohnSongs For The Gentle Man

She’s somebody who I only discovered a few years ago. I was really trying to choose albums that I genuinely listen to all the way through. That’s not always that easy. There are so many records I love but only for a few songs, perhaps. The first song I heard of hers was ‘Nice’, which is not on this album. A friend showed me a YouTube clip of that song when I was working on my last album. I couldn’t believe I’d not come across her before and I listened to Songs For The Gentle Man obsessively. I really don’t want to keep repeating myself but I remember painting my living room and just having that album on all the time and not tiring of it. It’s a mood thing: wanting to maintain the mood.
