Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Basic ChannelInversion

I never went clubbing. I’ve done everything the wrong way round because while everyone else was out getting mashed I was a family man, we had children very young so I was changing nappies or whatever. I’ve liked Basic Channel for a long time, but it was only recently that I sat down at my computer and bought most of it. It’s just pared down to the absolute basics, it’s as minimal as you can get. You can’t go much further than that without it losing all sense altogether. I like it because it sets a point, this is music at its absolute most basic, not in a bad way but you can’t remove any more of this. It’s fantastic. Really loud. I actually went clubbing a couple of months ago, I went to see Cut Hands at Corsica Studios. Russell Haswell was playing, he was really good, on top form. Sometimes he tries to hurt you too much, but that night he was alright.
