4. Gygory LigetiChamber Concerto, Ramifications, String Quartet No.2 and Adventures
Composers have been subsumed into film culture and been removed from their classical origins. Everybody knows Ligeti from 2001, but he’s not a film score composer. It’s almost impossible to listen to his stuff now without thinking of science fiction films, Stockhausen’s similar. Because they’re not conventionally classical you can kidnap them quite easily.
The funny thing about Ligeti is he didn’t know his music had been taken for the film because he was in Soviet Russia at the time, he was upset about it. As soon as I could afford to pay to go to listen to stuff, I’ve been interested in classical music. There was a Stockhausen season a few years back, there was something every day for a month at the Barbican, and I went every day.
I don’t really understand the difference between different forms of music, I took an interest in classical music at the same time as I was getting into punk. It’s liking both extremes, you like punk because it’s immediate, raw and not very talented, then you listen to Ligeti or some interesting contemporary classical music which is the exact opposite.
