I only discovered him at Christmas. I’ve made my music not in a vacuum but I don’t go out of my way to look for music. I like the idea that it’s isolated and self-referential. Someone said ‘have you heard Scott Walker’, I thought of the crooning stuff from the 60s and said ‘why would I be interested in that?’ They said ‘his recent stuff is quite mad’. I listened to it and I was quite bowled over by it. It’s very heartening that someone who is nearly 70-years-old has reversed the arrow of genetics, and is making really mad stuff in his later years rather than as a rebellious teenager. There’s hope for us all. It’s a bit difficult to listen to, but that’s not a problem… one of the tracks is a good one to listen to while driving, and crash and die.
