13. This Mortal CoilBlood
This Mortal Coil might be the ultimate thing that I’ve wished I could do. To me, they’re the ideal band. Making their own very particular, very defined thing that’s production-wise and aesthetically very clear, but covering these crazy folk songs – doing a Tim Buckley song in their own amazing 4AD style. It’s so free, and I just love the looseness and the collectiveness of This Mortal Coil as a kind of supergroup. It’s Ivo Watts-Russell’s brainchild, and he’s the one orchestrating and curating the band as a gallery or something.
When I was really, really young I thought I wanted to be a blues man or in krautrock; later on I wanted to be Caetano or This Mortal Coil. They were doing what I wanted to do and I love them so much. Who doesn’t? All their records are really some of the great recordings. I chose them because I wanted to celebrate them. I listen to them daily – it’s music that runs the gamut, and they have something for everyone and every occasion.
